Danny's a songwriter's songwriter -- with a literacy and complexity, and an underlying humanity, rare in this age of sound bite
attention span marketeering. His tunes are wire frames draped with sheets of poetry. They're not your typical Texas singer/songwriter colloquial polaroid trail diaries. And they'd make lousy beer commercials.
He has some of the qualities of the greats, though -- from Townes Van Zandt's ageless and understated sincerity, to Dylan's
topical relevance and wry sharp eye for the allusively obvious, to Dave Carter's quiet spiritual assurity and sense that each song was plucked whole from a tree more than labored through, line-by-line with pen and ink. And it all leaves you with that Leonard Cohen after-taste, that there's something here worth studying as much as listening to.
Those aren't holistic comparisons, just commonalities and contextual descriptions. Cause more than any particular shared virtue, Danny has a quality common to all these preeminent writers: he has his own unique voice. He doesn't sound like any of those guys at all, really. He doesn't sound like anybody you've heard yet. Truly.
Carrie Elkin is a troubadour in the most classic fashion, Elkin has ridden a Gypsy breeze of serendipity for the last ten years, landing for a time in Cleveland, Athens, Taos, Steamboat Springs, Colorado Springs and Boston, finally coming to settle in Austin, TX in the summer of 2007.
It's exactly this sort of openness to the people and places that pass through her life, and to the opportunities that might emerge in every new and particular circumstance, that grew to become the central theme of this new album . . . And the very process by which Elkin somehow managed to find herself in the midst of some of Austin's finest musicians and producers, literally, within days of arriving in town. While already making quite a buzz around the Austin scene with her highly spirited and spontaneous
performances, Carrie spends the majority of her time on the road still, touring nationally and in the UK and Europe.
Carrie was such a hit when she appeared here in August that we've invited her back with the fantastic Danny Schmidt.
This concert is sure to be in high demand.

Dec 12th:   Flossie Malavialle  Suggested Donation  £10

Flossie Malavialle is a French singer who started getting involved in the British folk scene in 2000-2001 while she was on a teacher exchange in the North East of England.
How it all started... After 12 years of teaching English full time in secondary schools in the South of France, she decided to apply for a job as a French teacher in England, as she felt it would boost her English to live abroad for a year. She got one in Stockton-on-Tees and was living in Darlington at the time (great part of the world to improve your English, like ). She had also been singing for years in France before that and that's why she found it quite natural to turn up at the Darlington folk club one night to meet the locals and sing a song... She didn't realise then that this was going to be the beginning of a new life in England.
And now….
After her exchange was over, she went back to France for a year but she missed the life she had had in England so decided to come back! She is now based in Darlington, does some supply teaching in the area when needed but is mainly focused on her singing.
She has released 6 albums since September 2002, "Thistledown", "Mistral" (March 2003), "Flossie sings Piaf" (May 2003) , "Making up the miles" in December 2004, "The Wilderness Years" in November 2006 and "Flossie sings Brel" in November 2007.
